AIDS

The bottom fell out of the Haitian tourist industry in 1981 when the US Center for Disease Control defined Haitians as a 'high risk group' for AIDS. People started to refer to the four H's: heroine addicts, hemophiliacs, homosexuals and Haitians. Paranoia spread, and soon it was (erroneously) believed that AIDS in the region had originated in Haiti. Meanwhile the first case of AIDS in Dominican Republic was reported in 1983, and the number has been rising ever since.
